You’ve probably already had a good look at the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the first officially-sanctioned PlayStation device in the world, and most likely think like we do; that it’s looking really fantastic. However, it’s a gaming device through and through, therefore it’ll live or die by the games released for it. Thankfully, Sony Ericsson understand this and have given us a sneak peak at what’s to come over the next months!
With the backing of Sony Computer Entertainment, the Xperia Play will be supplied with specially optimised PS1 titles, most of which will be delivered though the forthcoming PlayStation Suite, which looks like the PS3′s PlayStation Store for Android. Twenty gaming partners will also be supplying games for the Play when it launches, including Electronic Arts, GLU Mobile, PopCap, Namco Bandai and Gameloft.
Sony Ericsson have also promised at least 50 games will be available for the Xperia Play when it’s released, with titles including FIFA, Need for Speed, Guitar Hero, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Dead Space, Millionaire City, Sims 3, Splinter Cell and Galaxy on Fire. Dungeon Defender was also demoed on the phone during the press conference, and will be a multiplayer, cross-platform game. We can also expect other big-name titles to be ported over from other machines to the Xperia Play, with the excellent iPhone racer Reckless Racing mentioned as one.
Initially, games optimised for the Xperia Play will be found inside a pre-loaded application, and according to CNET, prices will range between 5 and 10 euros, or £4 and £8. Out of the box, your new Xperia Play will have Crash Bandicoot pre-loaded.
We can expect other announcements regarding the games coming to the PlayStation phone over the next few days and weeks, but even at this early stage it’s looking good for the Xperia Play.
