More iPad 3 Details Leak, Could Launch in March

It seems like the Apple rumour ‘silly season’ now lasts all-year round, with the mill currently grinding anything to do with the iPad 3. Today sees news coming from two different sources which when put together, paint a fairly complete picture of what Apple could have in store for us with their next tablet.

According to All Things Digital, Apple has chosen the first week of March to hold the launch event for the iPad 3, and once it’s over, the new tablet will go on sale within a few weeks. It was on the 2 March 2011 that Apple announced the iPad 2, and invitations to the event were sent out on 23 February 2011.

Here’s some speculation. Let’s say Apple choose either the 6 or 7 March for the event, and sends the invites out just over a week before on say, 27 February. Why those dates? The first two are mid-way during the first complete week of March, and Mobile World Congress starts on 27 February, that’s why.

As for the new tablet’s features, once again it’s being rumoured the device will have a Retina Display, just like the iPhone, but with a resolution of 2048 x 1536.  A quad-core processor could be powering it along. A similar rumour turned up in the New York Times, where an Apple employee said the screen would be ‘truly amazing,’ however, the device itself would remain essentially the same size and shape as the iPad 2.

Questions are also being raised concerning the name of the new tablet, with no-one saying for sure it’ll be called the iPad 3. If the screen is changed and it’s not just a processor bump, the use of iPad 2S would underplay the changes, a move that would seem unlikely.

We’ll find out soon.
