MWC 2012: Sony Launches the Sleek Xperia P

Sony held its Mobile World Congress press conference late on Sunday afternoon, and in very quick succession launched two new Xperia smartphones, the Xperia U and the Xperia P, the latter of which we’ll look at in more detail here.

At CES 2012 in January, Sony unveiled the Xperia S, a monster device with a big 4.3-inch screen and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, so it was hard to imagine an even higher spec phone had been saved for MWC. Sure enough, the Xperia P and U both sit below the Xperia S, but they’re both equally as exciting.

The Xperia P has a gorgeous aluminium unibody design and not only shares the same transparent light bar under the display as the Xperia S, which will alert you to incoming calls or messages, but a very similar overall look. In fact, it’s going to take a keen eye to tell them apart.

It’ll be the Xperia P’s slightly smaller 4-inch Bravia screen that gives it away though, plus the slight reduction in weight, as the P tips the scales at 120 grams. The screen has a qHD 960 x 540 pixel resolution, and introduces a feature called WhiteMagic, which enhances the brightness depending on environmental conditions, while paying attention to getting the best out of the battery.

On the rear panel sits the lens to the Xperia P’s 8 megapixel camera, which uses Sony’s Exmor R sensor, plus it has an LED flash and 1080p video recording, whilst around the front you’ll find a simple VGA video-call camera lens.

As the rumours suggested, the phone uses ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor 1GHz dual-core processor and initially, the phone will run Android Gingerbread, however, an upgrade to Android 4.0 should arrive shortly after its release.

Other key features include an NFC chip, DLNA connectivity, an HDMI-out, GPS, 16GB of internal storage and a choice of either black, white or red colour schemes. Sony has also launched the SmartDock, where a docked Xperia will act as an entertainment hub by sharing video content with other Sony products such as your TV.

The Xperia P will go on sale around the world during the second quarter of 2012, so we should expect it after April.
