Galaxy S3 to get Galaxy S4 Software Features, Plus Android 5.0

Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Launch-S-Translate

While the Galaxy S4 is getting all the attention at the moment, Samsung hasn’t forgotten about its previous Android flagship phone, the Galaxy S III. Owners should soon be receiving an update to Android 4.2.2, following the recent introduction of Android 4.1.2 and a whole suite of new features including the multi-tasking mode seen on the Galaxy Note tablets.

But Samsung’s updates won’t stop there, as at the launch of the Galaxy S4, it was confirmed the company is already working on an update for the Galaxy S3 which will add many of the new S4 features to the older phone. Of course, not all will work with the Galaxy S III due to new hardware inside the Galaxy S4, so don’t expect the universal remote control feature to make it across. Don’t despair though, as it should still receive most of the camera tweaks and new features such as S Translate.

Exactly when it’ll arrive isn’t clear, and Samsung doesn’t have the best track record with updates and keeping its customers informed, but at least we know it’s coming.

Slightly less official than this is news from Samsung fan blog SamMobile, upon which it’s claimed the Galaxy S III heads the list of phones Samsung will update to the next major version of Android – currently expected to be Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. It joins the Galaxy S4 (obviously) along with the Note II, Note 8.0 and Note 10.1. Phones such as the Galaxy S II, Note and Galaxy Grand will all stay on Android 4.2.2.

As Android 5.0 has yet to be announced, and Samsung hasn’t commented on the situation, this report remains a tantalising rumour. However, we look forward to hearing more details on the Galaxy S III’s update very soon.
