Nokia and BlackBerry Phablets May Not Appear Until 2014

Nokia LogoRumours have abounded recently about both Nokia and BlackBerry expanding the size of their handsets into phablet territory, with stories about 5-inch devices from each manufacturer having been around for some time.

However, tech site DigiTimes has cited an unnamed industry source claiming that the production schedules for both of these companies will mean that neither will be ready to launch a 5-inch handset before the end of the year.

BlackBerry’s upcoming A10 handset has been widely talked about of late, with suggestions being that the handset will be available before Christmas. The device is rumoured to feature a 5-inch display, taking the BlackBerry 10 platform to the firm’s largest device to date.

Details of Nokia’s plans have been a little less clear, but an image which purported to show the front fascia of a 6-inch phablet from the Finnish firm emerged last week, suggesting that a large Windows Phone device could be in the works.

DigiTimes has acknowledged in its report that a roll out towards the end of 2013 is possible for each handset, but states that it is likely they will not emerge until next year. This could mean quite a wait for fans of each manufacturer who are eager to see what can be done with the larger screen sizes.
